Built by the Imperial Japanese Navy in 1941, she was one of the two heaviest battleships ever made. She was sunk by US bombers on April 7, 1945 on her way to beach herself on Okinawa and defend it until destroyed.

The wreck was first tentatively found in 1982 and more positively identified in 1984. The wreckage was later scanned digitally in 2016.
